BioOnce while driving through/in the cacophony that is Mexico City's 'periferico' (ring highway), I heard the chimes from the steeple of a nearby church, whose belfry was just at the height of the elevated roadway. In this instant was coalesced for me a certain view of modern Latin America, its colorful and aromatic bustle and pollution, and its devout Catholicism -- in Mexico hybridized with a vast history of Mayan and other indigenous folk beliefs.
