The "one word makes all the difference" department
My fortune cookie the other night:

"The current year will bring you much happiness."

There is definitely some odd cross-lj-user channeling going on these days.

Trying to figure out which "one word" you're referring to.

If you were a white water kayaker, it might have been a good fortune with the word "year" omitted.

I guess I should start dreading 2009.

And kute on the kayaking :)

I'm not following. Because the current year will bring you much happiness, you think that implies the following year will be worse?!

No -- because the fortune tells me the current year will bring me much happiness, I think it implies the fortuneteller thinks the following year will be worse.

OK, your "edit" of my comment is drawing a distinction between what the fortune says and what will actually come to pass. That's fine, but it's not the issue I was getting at. I don't see why one thing being good has to imply that another thing will be worse. That's what I think of as a scarcity mentality.

There's enough key lime pie to go around for everybody.

Yes, but the whole thing was really just a joke :) Me impersonating just such a "glass-half-empty" personality, and reacting to the fortune with a "current? The CURRENT year?! Oh my god, what about the REST of my life?"

But I'm enjoying the key lime pie, too :)

Ah, I see. Pass the pie, please. :)
