...once commented in wonderment about his first daughter, when she was about 3:

"Wow, she has no idea how much we love her, and she won't until she grows up and has her own kids."

Being that I have no kids, I'm not even sure I know what he's talking about. :). I do remember hearing, I think it was on Law & Order:

"You're only as happy as your least happy child."

I imagine that's true, based on observing my own mom and my brother's current struggles with depression. I tried to spare them the ugly details of my 7 years on the couch...

And I see this kind of thing all the time with the high school kids I work with. The SAT is one of the most stressful things some kids go thru, and I connect with parents because I understand that and talk to them about how to help the kids get thru it successfully, and without going bald like me. Or you, John!

Sounds like an argument for not having too many kids. My mom has four. You can bet that any point in time at least one of them is dealing with some misery.
